Children Of Power

Satan hampers far too many people to the point where they feel worthless. They might carry weights of guilt and shame. But the good news of the Gospel is that anyone, no matter who they are or what they have done, can become a true child of God, and a powerful one at that.

Many feel worthless or even disabled. Sad to say, some Christians are also plagued by these feelings. However, the Gospel brings good news that once are are truly born again we become a child of God, and one with power. “Children” was frequently used by the Holy Spirit through the Apostle John, occurring at least fifteen times in his three brief epistles. Here is an example from 1 John 5:1-4 from the New American Standard Bible (NASB):

“Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten

of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world --- our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? ”

Before we continue, once again I must point out that "believes" in regard to salvation mens to fully trust Christ and act accordingly, as the context shows. "Born of God" is equivalent to "born again" (also "born from above") in John 3:1-18. We will see five things from verse 4 in regard to God's children of power.

I. Possibilities

“For whatever . . ."

I will address two groups of people at this point, the first of which will be those that do not have Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord (King). Believe the Word of God when it says that God is not willing anyone should perish 2 Peter 3:9. It does not matter who you are or how bad you are. Even the wicked King Manasseh who burnt his children alive and did many other hideous things was forgiven and accepted by God after sincerely repenting (2 Chronicles 33:1-20).

Also believe the Word when it states in John 1:12 NASB, "But as many as received him, to them gave he power (authority) to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." Again, it does not matter what they were or what they had done. Consider 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 (NASB), “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God."

Did you see that it states in verse 11, "Such were some of you"? Being born again by the power of God, however, spiritually washed them, sanctified and justified them. Christ is the hope for anyone today including everyone not mentioned in verses 9 and 10 which would included the murderer, child abuser, drug pusher, and whoever else.  Anyone bound or even possessed by satan {1} can become a true child of God. God through Christ can take any twisted soul and untwist for His honor and glory.

I will now address the second group of people, those that are born again in Jesus Christ. There are times the enemy would want to make us feel guilty and worthless. Provided we have sincerely asked forgiveness for our sins, no real Christian should feel guilty due to their life of sin before Christ came in. And 1 John 1:9 deals with the fact of sinning after coming to Christ. Also, No real Christian should feel hampered for what was done to them before or after coming to Christ.

II. Position Of Those Truly Trusting In Christ

“. . . is born of God . . .”

First it must be said that being born of God is not based upon any good we have done (Titus 3:5) and certainly no one is worthy to be born again. We are not saved by our works but only by His finished work through Christ in us. Foundational terms used to describe how one becomes born again include "receive" (John 1:12) and "believe" (Romans 10:9-10). Based upon Holy Scriptures relating to salvation, to receive Him and believe in Him includes the fact that we need Him because we are sinners by nature.

Being born again by God through Christ makes us a true child of God. We can be recipients of the fulness of His double love, that is, both His agapao and phileo love. And, of course, it is not just for while we are on earth, but these things are ours if we remain in Him and are found in Him when we leave this world.

III. Power For His Children

“. . . overcomes the world . . ."

The world, or we could say society, puts a lot

of pressure upon people to conform to and agree with things that are ungodly. Before coming to Christ many find it easy just to go along with whatever the world does or, as in my own case mainly, feel crushed by mocking, shame, intimidation and more. Things change for the honor and glory of God when Christ dwells within.

So, therefore, as it is written in 1 John 4:4 (NASB), “You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” With Christ within we are stronger than the world. We have the victory over the pressures and temptations of this present world because through Christ we have the ability to keep His commandments (note 1 John 5:2-3).

IV. Powerhouse Of Faith

“. . .  and this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith."

The Greek word here used for “faith” may also be translated faithfulness. “Our faith” is clarified by Galatians 2:20 (NASB), “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”

So, as we daily die to self and yield to Christ within it is His faithfulness that empowers our faithfulness. As a temple of God (see 1 Corinthian 3:16) each of us is a powerhouse to show forth His glory and holiness. While it is done within us by our cooperation, it is not done by our own strength and wisdom.

V. Potential For All

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith.“

Again, it does not matter who you are or what you have done. Nor does it matter about your level of IQ, financial situation, handicap status, age or anything else. Once someone truly surrenders to Christ, with Christ dwelling within, nothing can hold us back from reaching our full potential in Christ.

Reaching our full potential in Christ means to develop the character of Christ, but be careful to read the all four Gospels on Christ so you have a holy balanced view of Him. Through Christ within we can produce the fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). We may also be used in the gifts and operations of the Holy Spirit  (1 Corinthians 12).

If you do not have Christ as your Savior and King I invite you to become a child of God, to become part of the children of power. If He is your King and Savior do not be intimidated by the world, crushed by your past and realize that with Christ within He has killed your sinful tendencies so you are no longer bound by them. Those born of God are certainly given everything to meet their full potential in Him, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith.”

We stand together as brothers and sisters with Jesus and as the beloved children of God. Now our God depends on us, and looks to us to be the presence of truth and love in the world.
