Release From The Enemy

Very few people actually enjoy being under bondage, and the ones that do usually do not know how serious their circumstances are. And, for those under bondage, most do not know how to get out of it. The Holy Bible, of course, has the answer to this situation.

From the time of its inception to the time of its dissolution, Israel had numerous occasions when it was under bondage. Before anyone writes that off as just history they should realize that these accounts in the Holy Bible are for our benefit because they warn us that we, too, can find ourselves in spiritual bondage.

One such passage is Isaiah 14:25-27, which is as follows:
“YHVH of hosts has sworn, saying, ‘Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand: 25  That I will break the Assyrian in my

land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders. 26  This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations. 27  For YHVH of hosts has purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?’”

Assyria will devotionally represent for us the devil and/or our own sin nature, our carnal, non-spiritual nature. We will first start with the problem, which will be followed by four things from God.

I. The Problem 25b

“‘...then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.'"

Assyria was one of the nations that oppressed Israel and Judah at various times throughout their history. Israel repeatedly sinned and Assyria eventually overthrew Israel and exiled most its inhabitants. Assyria also attempted to conquer Judah.

Satan through our own sin nature desires either to keep people in bondage or bring them into bondage. When we sin, that is, disobey God, our sin nature becomes stronger. After a time the devil through our sin nature will oppress us, then eventually enslave us. Sin exiles us from the presence of God, just as Adam and Eve could no longer face God after they had sinned.

But, as we see in the rest of the text, God had a plan. This is also true when it comes to salvation. The Word of God indicates that even before everything was created God had a plan of redemption for man {1} and His creation. We see the following things in the remainder of our passage: God’s . . .

II. Plan 24

“YHVH of hosts has sworn, saying, ‘Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:...’”

When some people read a verse like that they assume that since God has made plans then they are unable to choose their own destiny. However, as we look at the entire Word of God we see that God has given us a will with the ability to choose {2}. Though He has plans, we can choose what side we want to be on.

Those that do not fear God, who have not made a commitment to Him through Christ, have a dismal future ahead of them, not just in this life, but in the time to come. And, you might have noticed how cantankerous much of the world is getting. If you do not agree with sin then you are a hater (especially if you are a Christian) and must be silenced. We are living in the times when Psalm 2 is being fulfilled.

III. Power 25a

“‘That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: . . .’”

Satan’s power, as well as the power of our own sin nature, was broken when Christ died upon the cross and then arose from the dead. This is part of the redemption for man that is provided by God. But we must desire to forsake our sins and fully enter into the redemption He has lovingly provided. In so doing, it could be considered that we have entered into God’s land of rest from sin and self, and from oppression and obsession.

Only in Christ is there complete and lasting freedom from sin. While a disciple might find immediate relief from certain issues, they will also find there are some battles along the Way toward Eternal Life. Growing in Christ is a learning process. I would say all true disciples have their spiritual “ups and downs,” but if we latch on to the grace of God in Christ and press on by His Spirit we will learn to be more victorious as time progresses.

IV. Purpose 26

“‘This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.’”

Ah! We see here that it is not just Assyria. In this statement God points out that the power of other nations that had, or will, oppress Israel will be broken. Hopefully this

will occur soon. After all, it could be said that sin is getting out of control.

But it will only go so far. Consider the prophecy of Daniel 2 that came about because of the dream King Nebuchadnezzar had where he saw a great image of a man comprised of five segments. Going from head to feet and toes the segments were gold, silver, bronze, iron, and iron mixed with clay. This turns out to be Babylon, Media-Persia, Greece, Rome and the nations of the world today. All have oppressed Israel.

In his dream, Nebuchadnezzar saw a stone cut without hands that struck the feet of the image. When that occurred the whole image crumbled and turned into dust. The stone then became a mountain which filled the earth. That stone is Christ and that mount is His coming Kingdom. That is the plan God has for this world. If we are on His side, we will be part of His kingdom on earth.

V. Prevailing 27

“‘For YHVH of hosts has purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?’”

The answer to those two questions, of course, is no one. Again, this is why the world is raging. As I type this, dozens of men and women, court clerks, in the United States may be facing imprisonment because they are refusing to issue marriage licenses to sa-m-e--s-ex {3} “couples” after five people on our Supreme Court think they know better than God.

The world system instinctively knows its time is coming to an abrupt end. The United States at one time was a land of freedom. As an U.S. citizen I need to tell you that is no longer true. Centuries ago people had come here in part for religious freedom. Our religious freedom is growing dim.

Nonetheless, the point  of verse 27 is that God will prevail. There is no stopping Him, and it behooves anyone reading this to make sure they are on God’s side. One should not think religion will do it. Religion will not ensure safety from the wrath of God. However, a relationship with God through Christ will. Matthew 11:28-30 records Christ’s invitation to all: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

God will definitely prevail. He invites all of us to join Him.

Unless otherwise noted all Holy Scripture is from the 1769 Authorized Version with spelling of some words updated for our time in addition to changing LORD to YHVH as it rightly should be when the text so indicates. An * next to the abbreviation for another translation or version indicates the same for the text presented.
