Trust The Eternal Word

There are times I must wonder if some people who say they believe there is a God think that He is stupid. It seems like they feel God created man, let mankind multiply, but left them no clear instructions regarding their spiritual well-being. They consider the Holy Bible to be the work and word of man. The Holy Spirit had something to say about that through one of God’s ancient prophets.

With thousands of religions and billions of people with their own ways and morals it can be quite confusing on how to live and what morals to have. If we factor out God and His Way, Jesus Christ, who is to say what is right and what is wrong? I can remember the time before I came to Christ wondering about whose morals should I go by when dating a girl. I wondered if some of my relatives were in the God chosen religion then why did many get drunk, cuss, told dirty jokes and more.

So, just who is it

to say? How about God Himself? Surely God speaks to people today--if they listen. But, then again, how do we know when someone is hearing from God, or if even our own selves are hearing from God? It would make great sense if we have something directly from God we can read for ourselves, and, indeed we do have something, the Holy Bible in its original tongues (Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek), and helps like BlueLetterBible.com or the Online Bible available at OnlineBible.net in North America and OnlineBible.org elsewhere to get the actual meanings of words and phrases in our own language so we are not misled by an erroneous translation or version.

But is the Holy Bible really the Word of God? I answer that important question in my article “You Can Know The Holy Bible Is The Word Of God” which you may read by following the link below {1}. There I present at least three proofs it is the Word of God. You can trust it, and the Word of God itself encourages you to trust it, for it is written in Isaiah 40:6-8, “The voice said,’Cry.’ And he said, ‘What shall I cry?’ ‘All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: 7 The grass withers, the flower fades: because the spirit of YHVH blows upon it: surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers, the flower fades: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.’” There is a contrast in verse 8 which we will view as follows.

I. What Fades

“The grass withers, . . ."

As we read in verse 6 mankind is spoken of as the grass, and, for sure people do come and go. Barring the rapture of the Church, every individual is born and then dies. Darwin is no longer here, nor Voltaire, Nietzsche and others. Many people groups and nations have came and went. The “Reverend” Moon of the Unification Church whose teachings, in the least, inferred was the 20th Century incarnation of Christ, whom thousands blindly followed, is no longer here. Much of the efforts and ideas of these and others has gone or become weakened after the death of these people.

Aspects of society fade, or falter. Man’s best does not last. The dynasties of Egypt and China are gone and other realms are no more. Of the Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World only the Great Pyramid of Giza remains but the majority of its facade is gone. The second chapter of Daniel points out that Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon (the kingdom described as a head of gold in Daniel 2) would pass, but it would be followed by inferior kingdoms. We are currently probably in the section of the statue described in Daniel 2 that are the “feet and toes” made of iron and clay, a substance extremely inferior to all those before it, yet there are groups in the world that think current society is the best that ever was!

Peace is fleeting. Cultures and movements die out while some others mutate, most often than not, downgrading into greater sin. As mentioned, morals change. What once was called good (and much of what is called good by the Holy Bible) is now called bad and vice versa. Religions, denominations, and such come and go, or change, quite often, to accept sin and sinful lifestyles. And, beware! Revelation 13 indicates there will come a time when religions will merge to a degree under the rule of the coming False Prophet in regard to The Beast who is often referred to as the Antichrist.

But, that too shall pass and the Word of God is vibrantly clear that Christ will reign on earth for 1,000 years after which there will be a new heavens and earth. All things, ideas, governments, and more pass but God is eternal and it behooves us to pay close attention to what He says. That brings us to the unchanging written Word of God. That means translations and versions, though they may try, do not alter what God has said. Always refer to the ancient texts with helps like those mentioned above.

II. What Lasts

“But the word of our God . . .”

The Word of God is eternal truth. Psalm 119:89 states, “Forever, O YHVH, your word is settled in heaven.” It existed before the earth was made. By His Holy Spirit God moved upon godly men to record what God wanted us to have. It was God-breathed into their hearts (2 Timothy 3:16) with precisely the words, word order, and grammar that God desired us to read. This is one reason why it is good to read the Holy Bible in a literal translation like Young’s or a work by Jay P. Green. The New King James version is good too {2}.

Some equate the Holy Bible with other literature or even consider it the same as some ancient works that contained myths. Once again if you read the article listed with footnote {1} below you will see the Holy Bible is quite distinct. Its prophecies come to pass and when coupled with the Holy Spirit the Word is empowered to change anyone’s life for the better to the honor and glory of God. Myths do not have such power.

The phrase “. . . of our God . . .” also speaks of a multitude of things. Consider just “God” by itself. God knows all things. God knew exactly how the world would be today. Therefore the Holy Bible contains all the spiritual information we need to know to point us to salvation and godly growth therein. It is really not behind the times. It is, instead, that society has opted to wander far away from their Creator lest they give up their sinful ways which they enjoy.

Consider the plural possessive “our” in “our God.” That speaks to me that the Word of God was given for each one of us personally. He desires not to be a distant God but One Who is right here with us, even in us if we agree to that. Many times I have found certain verses, sentences, phrases, or even just words speak to me, and the same happens to many others.

For example, when we felt God telling us to start a church in Cambridge, Maryland the brethren above me in the Assemblies of God {3} forbade us to go. We felt God said we would go regardless. After that we got a providential indicator that we would go, then a second one occurred. I then said to the Lord something like, “I know sometimes these things happen in threes, so I will take one more.” It was near the start of winter that I was a tad despondent about the situation thinking that the Assemblies of God would never pay attention to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. I had opened my Holy Bible and as I scanned one psalm there was a word in that psalm that seemed to “jump out” at me: “wait.” That was good enough! And, yes, God saw to it we did go to Cambridge under the Assemblies of God.

This is a loving fact about God. He wants to be within us and we in Him. This is why millions of true Christians often receive a direct personal word from the Holy Bible. Sin prevents such a close communion with God. This is why true Christians beckon everyone to come to God through Jesus Christ, totally surrendering their lives to Him. Upon doing so, one finds that God speaks to them just as He did to Abraham, Moses, Paul, and a host of others. All of those people were just as sinful

as you or I, but when they yielded to God they walked in close fellowship with Him.

“ . . . stands forever.”

Now look at the last two words, “. . . stands forever.” By faith a true Christian believes that when the Word of God was first written down by holy men it was done so without error. And based upon certain passages we know that it is immutable, that is, it cannot be altered. Yes, people have tried to alter it and that is one reason why some versions and so called translations exist. Some have dared to modify the Word of God to fit their social or religious agenda. So, again, that is why I encourage all to read and study from a literal and accurate work like those already mentioned.

Being eternal means it is final. God said it and that is it. This is in stark contrast to human laws and rulings whether they emanate from a church or earthly government. And, while science has developed many wonderful and helpful things, many of its discoveries, ideas, and theories remain in a state of constant flux. When I was a child, it was declared eggs were healthy to eat and Pluto was a planet. Within a few decades it changed to that eggs were unhealthy to consume and now currently it is said they should be eaten with moderation. Pluto is no longer declared a planet.

A great spiritual devastation of our time is the trampling of marriage. Yes, I will point out that according the Holy Word of God, same sex marriage is not marriage at all but a blight that no society before us has embraced so much as the current people of the world have, and is a great desecration of an institution established by God and declared to be holy by Him. However, this is equally true of the acceptance of divorce and remarriage by some churches and religious groups as perfectly acceptable and permissible by God. Yet, as one carefully and prayerfully reads the entire counsel of God on this matter, it is absolutely not permissible and He considers it to be adultery (Luke 16:18).

As you see, whether it is government, science, legislation and anything else generated by man, it is subject to change. With man nothing is final except any sinful fate an individual or group chooses. However, the written Word of God is set. God’s rules do not change. Despite how some cynics would present God to us, God is not double minded. He does not change or relax His rules because society is changing. His standards are set and firm.

With that in mind, think of the prophecies it contains, many of which have already come to pass. And let us briefly consider what concerns our time, which we have already mentioned about the feet of clay and iron of the image in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. We know it deals with our time because all the other kingdoms (Babylon being gold, Media Persia being silver, Greece being bronze, Rome being iron) have already come. If you continue to read in that chapter you will see a stone cut from a mountain without human help strike the feet of the image causing it to crumble while the stone becomes a mountain that fills the earth. This speaks of Christ’s Kingdom coming to earth and the vision is crystallized in Revelation 11:15, “ And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, ‘The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.’”

Be very assured that shall come to pass, keeping in mind the United Nations was established in 1945 and Israel in 1948, both of which set the stage for the literal fulfillment of Joel 3:1-2, “For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, 2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.”

Although mans best, man’s rules, standards, and so on, come and go there is great solace in the phrase “stands forever.” This speaks of spiritual security in many aspects, but let us focus on this: Trusting and standing upon the Word of God by His Spirit brings peace of mind as we live by and live in the unchanging standards of God. We no longer have to wonder if something is right or wrong. Whatever God says is right is right and whatever He says is wrong is wrong. If we obey His will as recorded in His Word, just like His Word that lives forever so we, too, shall live forever (1 John 2:17). That is real security.

Finally, we must point out that the Holy Bible, the written Word of God, is complete. You will hear about “lost books of the Bible,” but considering God is Who He is, everything He has deemed needful for us to have is in the Holy Bible. No Church council pieced the Holy Bible together. The Holy Spirit already had done that within the Body of Christ. All any valid Church council did was to help settle any questions in the minds of the followers of Christ.

So, the Holy Bible is complete, and it is complete not just regarding content, but it is spiritually complete for us today and therefore greatly beneficial. There is no facet of our lives that the Holy Bible cannot speak to. Coupled with the Holy Spirit it will bring us strength, comfort, guidance, empowerment, and so much more to the glory of God. And if we remain in Christ, the benefits will carry on throughout eternity. Do not trust people, the things of this world, nor any other earthly thing, nor anything apart from the Holy Bible, but only trust the eternal Word of God that stands forever, and you will live forever.

Unless otherwise noted all Holy Scripture is from the 1769 Authorized Version with spelling of some words updated for our time in addition to changing LORD to YHVH as it rightly should be when the text so indicates. An * next to the abbreviation for another translation or version indicates the same for the text presented.

On account of sin, every person is born and lives as if he or she were in a foreign land. Our own reality is hidden from us as long as we are not rooted in God and in communion with him. Our religions and ideologies, products of our culture, do not permit us to go beyond the limits of a world we make to suit ourselves. To become aware of our vocation we need God's call and we need to be willing to get out of this vicious circle.
